“Bawat wika ay tinig ng
kultura’t pagkakakilanlan,
Saan mang dako ng Pilipinas,
dapat pahalagahan.”
Every language carries a story.
Not only does it tell us which country or region they’re from, but it tells us something about the community, the people, traditions, and experiences passed from one generation to the next. This was the heart of this year’s Buwan ng Wika celebration at Keys. Students explored what it means to be a Filipino; how rich the country is in cultural traditions and practices; and how diverse language is across the Philippines.
Rather than celebrating Filipino culture as one single experience, the Filipino department thoughtfully created activities that encouraged students to discover the many aspects that make up our country, especially language.
Bringing the Theme to Life
From Pre-K to Grade 12, each grade level was assigned a different region in the Philippines. Through their assigned regions, students discovered dialects such as Filipino, Ilokano, Hiligaynon, Ivatan, Kapampangan, Bikolano, Aklanon, and many more.
Through these regions, students learned that language is more than a way of communicating. It is a reflection of one’s identity, roots, place, history, and community.
Each grade level created a slogan to represent their assigned region while contributing to the overall theme of this year’s Buwan ng Wika: Wherever a language comes from, it deserves to be heard, understood, and valued.
Linggo ng Wika Program of Events
From September 14-September 18, 2026, the week was curated in a way that students not only learned about Filipino culture, but also turned it into an unforgettable experience.
Each day invited the community to participate in different ways. While some grade levels participated in traditional Filipino games, others took part in Battle of Wits, showcasing their knowledge and proficiency in the Filipino language. This encouraged students to practice teamwork, decision-making, and appreciation for Filipino culture.
Other activities included dressing up with recycled materials (Luntiang Lunes), wearing a color from the Philippine flag (Makabayang Martes), creative interpretation of Filipino culture (Malikhaing Miyerkules), celebrating characters from Philippine literature and art (Hirayang Huwebes), and culminating the week with students wearing traditional Filipino attire (Baro’t Sayang Biyernes).
The Keys community came together for a parade where students proudly presented their slogans through a class recitation, followed by a traditional salusalo that brought another familiar Filipino tradition to the celebration: sharing meals as a community.
Celebrating Filipinoness
This year’s Buwan ng Wika gave students an opportunity not only to celebrate being Filipino, but also to recognize how diverse being Filipino can be. Different cultures, different languages, different traditions, and different stories, but each contributes to a larger story of the Philippines. More than a celebration and coming together, it is a reminder that appreciating our country begins with listening to its many voices.
